The Future of Gearless Elevator Technology

The modern elevator is no longer merely a box that travels between floors. It is a precision-engineered system where every component — from the traction motor to the door operator — is designed around one guiding principle: the quality of the journey itself.

The Problem with Geared Systems

Traditional geared traction elevators rely on an intermediate worm gear between the motor and the traction sheave. While effective, this arrangement introduces:

For luxury residential buildings, hospitality environments, and premium commercial spaces, these characteristics are simply incompatible with the experience expected.

The Gearless Advantage

A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) eliminates the gearbox entirely. The motor rotor is mounted directly on the sheave shaft, driven by a rotating magnetic field produced by the stator windings interacting with high-energy rare-earth permanent magnets on the rotor.

The results are measurable:

| Parameter | Geared System | Gearless PMSM | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Energy Consumption | Baseline | 30–40% lower | | Noise Level | 60–72 dB | 45–55 dB | | Maintenance Intervals | 3 months | 12 months | | Speed Capability | Up to 1.5 m/s | Up to 4.0 m/s |

Frequency-Controlled Acceleration

A gearless drive on its own is not sufficient. The motor must be paired with a Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) inverter drive that precisely shapes the acceleration and deceleration curves.

Rather than simply switching between full-speed travel and abrupt braking, the VVVF controller:

  1. Accelerates gently — ramping speed over a calculated S-curve profile.
  2. Maintains constant mid-travel speed with tight regulation.
  3. Decelerates smoothly — mirroring the acceleration curve in reverse.
  4. Levels precisely — creeping the final approach to within ±2mm of floor level.

This is what produces the sensation of a seamless, floating ride.

Machine Room-Less (MRL) Integration

Modern gearless motors are compact enough to be mounted inside the hoistway itself — either at the top or integrated into the wall structure. This eliminates the dedicated machine room that was once standard in every elevator installation, freeing up valuable real estate on the topmost floor of the building.

Teknix Vertix and Greentek platforms both operate on this MRL principle, with motor envelopes optimised for tight architectural integration without compromising performance.

What This Means for Your Building
